With the rapid emergence and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in recent times, safety professionals are naturally curious about how it can enhance their work.

AI’s capabilities are growing so quickly that it has become a challenge to remain up to date with its potential applications, especially in workplace safety. The use of AI can supplement safety documentation, simplify decision-making, and share multidisciplinary knowledge to enhance safety management in general.

The use of machine learning provides safety professionals with access to advanced data analytics through analyzing historic company and industry data as well as utilizing pattern recognition (The Human Capital Hub, 2023). This allows for informed, predictive insights to assess safety hazards, enabling safety professionals to take preventative action before accidents happen while reducing their reliance on lagging indicators. Moreover, AI excels at retrospectively analyzing prior incidents and root cause analysis, providing strong insights that can inform future safety strategies.

Another significant application of AI is the ability to make use of individualized risk assessment and monitoring. Safety systems integrated with AI are able to track workers’ health histories and potential individual symptoms related to the specific risks they face in the workplace (Lemos et al., 2024). Safety professionals can receive alerts and tailored suggestions specific to each worker. This innovative approach to safety moves past broadly applied measures and ensures that workers’ individual needs are specifically targeted, leading to more effective safety management.

Although AI in safety has many benefits, its integration comes with a few challenges as well, one of which being data privacy. The vast amount of personal and company data that these AI systems will be provided open access to naturally raises significant privacy concerns. While keeping up to date with the development of AIs capabilities, it is crucial that companies also ensure that their data is stored securely. Investing in robust cybersecurity measures can help protect sensitive information and maintain trust in these systems. Moreover, given that most AI systems are still in their early stages of development, there are concerns over their reliability and accuracy, especially in a field like occupational health and safety where misinterpreted information could easily lead to poor and misguided safety decisions.

Overall, AI has the potential to revolutionize common approaches to workplace safety through its many capabilities. While there are challenges to address, the continuing development of AI promises to enhance the ability of safety professionals to proactively manage risks and create safer workspaces. Embracing these assistive technologies while keeping mindful of their drawbacks is key.
